"Do you have more?"

Ask any mom that has lost a child and they will say that one of the questions that always tugs at their heart is the one of "How many kids do you have?" Today I was asked a verision of that...Mads and I were at Michael's craft store tonight and an older woman walked past us. She commented on how cute Madelyn was and then...duh duh duhhhhh (dramatic music) asked, "Is she your only child, or do you have more?" It took me a few seconds to answer but I then answered something like, "Well she has a little brother, but he recently passed away." The woman actually even went on to ask a few more questions, etc. but I was proud of myself that I was able to hold a conversation with her about Timmy and not burst into tears. One of the only times I've been able to EVER do that and certainly the first I've been able to do it with a stranger... (pats self on the back) Little steps right? I know that sometimes it might be "easier" to just say that Mads is our only child but that would be untrue and unfair to Timmy. He was here with us for four amazing days. He IS our son though and ALWAYS will be. Adam and I have TWO children and Mads is already a big a sister. He'll always be ours and always be loved.

  1. Very difficult question to answer...you have to ask your self, "Do I want to explain or not?".... Timmy knows he is loved and will never be forgotten and I am sure he understands if you answer that you have one child. I am sure he wants you to answer in anyway that is easiest on you...he knows he is loved. Hmmmm.....at Michaels again? More craft projects :) Fun!
